James Jowers Tompkins Square Park, New York City 1967
I used to live just a few doors down from Tompkins Square a while after this photo was taken. When I lived there, Alphabet City was pretty much entirely a slum and most of the people who you encountered in Tompkins Square were junkies catching a nod. Where I lived (around 4th and Ave A), I think mine was 1 of only 2 or 3 apartments in the building that were actually inhabited and rented. The rest were crashes and shooting galleries. I always had to step over nodding junkies to get into my place. Oh, and if I recall correctly (I might not, this was a while ago), I think the great early NYC punk fanzine “New York Rocker” had its offices either on the ground floor of my building or maybe it was on the same block. I haven’t been there in quite a while, but from what I’ve heard, the area is now entirely gentrified and my cockroach-infested dump would probably rent for $2,500 a month.
